Adam Mickiewicz, Pan Tadeusz

More than a national epic, Pan Tadeusz preserves the memory of an entire European
civilisation.
Written in exile during the nineteenth century, Adam Mickiewicz’s masterpiece gathers within
itself landscape, ritual, memory, hospitality, seasonal rhythm, and the codes of a cultivated
landed culture already passing into history. The work occupies a central place in Polish
literature, yet its deeper themes extend far beyond national borders.
Presented here in English translation, the poem becomes accessible to readers outside the
Polish language while retaining the scale and ceremonial dignity of the original. For some,
the edition offers entry into an unfamiliar literary tradition. For others — particularly
descendants of the Polish diaspora — it may represent a return toward inherited cultural
memory.
The edition was illustrated by Jerzy Kozimor and bound entirely by hand in artistic leather.
Selected copies incorporate silver and precious stones within the binding structure, not as
ornament alone, but as elements contributing to the symbolic atmosphere of the work.
Printed on special art paper and issued in only ninety-nine numbered copies, the edition was
conceived for libraries in which literature forms part of a larger continuity of place,
inheritance, and cultivated interior life.
Several exemplars entered international private collections following publication. Selected
bindings may still be presented privately upon request.
