Not every Shakespearean comedy invites lightness. As You Like It does so with unusual
intelligence.
Behind its wit, disguises, pastoral play, and theatrical irony lies a meditation on identity itself:
on the instability of roles, the freedom of performance, and the fragile distance between
civilisation and nature. The Forest of Arden is not merely a setting. It is a suspended world in
which social order loosens and language becomes unexpectedly free.
This bilingual English–Polish edition was conceived in that same spirit of clarity and
movement. The visual rhythm of the volume avoids heaviness, allowing text and image to
breathe within an open typographic structure.
Linocuts by Andrzej Czeczot accompany the work with restraint and precision. Their
intelligence lies not in illustration alone, but in suggestion. Rather than explaining the
comedy, they enter into its theatrical logic: agile, ironic, economical, and quietly subversive.
Printed on handmade paper and issued in a strictly limited edition, the work was bound
entirely by hand in artistic leather. The bindings maintain formal discipline while preserving
subtle individuality between copies.
Several exemplars entered private theatrical and literary collections following publication.
