Certain poems resist enclosure within ordinary form.
Jacques Prévert’s L’Orgue de Barbarie unfolds through repetition, return, interruption, and
circular rhythm. The poem advances only to begin again, moving with the mechanical
persistence of the barrel organ from which it takes its name.
This bilingual edition was therefore conceived not as a codex, but as a continuous spatial
structure. The work takes the form of an accordion book capable of unfolding without fixed
conclusion, allowing the poem’s internal movement to become physical experience.
The cover, executed in handmade paper, functions almost as an envelope or protective skin.
Within it, the unfolding sequence creates a reading rhythm governed less by pagination than
by gesture, extension, and recurrence.
Rather than illustrating the text externally, the material structure itself becomes interpretation.
The edition belongs to that rare category in which literature, object, and movement form a
single inseparable entity.
Because of its unusual structure, the work has been presented selectively within private
collections and artist’s book contexts. Additional examples may be shared privately upon
request.
