Some books are designed to be read. Others are designed to alter atmosphere itself.
This Polish–German edition of Epitaph for Hawthorn was conceived as a lyrical object
governed by mood, tactility, colour, and sensory memory. The poetry of Maria Pawlikowska-
Jasnorzewska — delicate, intimate, fleeting, yet emotionally exact — demanded a form
equally restrained and suggestive.
The volume incorporates specially woven violet silk jacquard, papers in tonal variations of
pearl and lavender, folded leaves of differing lengths, and a subtle cyclamen fragrance
introduced directly into the material structure of the edition.
Illustrations by Włodzimierz Kukliński do not narrate the poems literally. Instead, they emerge
from the same inward climate: fragile, allusive, and suspended between image and
emotional echo.
The result is less a conventional poetry volume than a controlled sensory composition in
book form — one in which texture, scent, colour, and silence remain inseparable from the
reading experience itself.
Several copies entered private poetry collections shortly after publication. Selected
exemplars may still be presented privately through direct correspondence.
