Mark Twain understood that wit may reveal human nature more precisely than solemnity.
The aphorisms gathered in Virtues and Other Vices move effortlessly between humour,
scepticism, moral observation, and intellectual play. Their brevity conceals unusual
sharpness. Twain does not construct systems; he destabilises certainties.
This bilingual English–Polish edition was conceived not merely as a literary volume, but as
an evolving object of reflection. The illustrations by Krzysztof Urbanowicz unfold
progressively throughout the book: isolated images gradually connect into larger visual
constellations, creating a secondary narrative parallel to the aphorisms themselves.
The edition exists in two materially distinct forms — deep cornflower leather with gold and
blind tooling, and an alternative indigo velvet binding whose tactile softness deliberately
alters the atmosphere of the object.
At the conclusion of the volume, blank pages invite readers to continue the dialogue through
their own annotations, reflections, and collected aphorisms. In this way, each copy acquires
an individual afterlife shaped partly by its owner.
