Heinrich Heine’s poetry occupies a singular place within European Romanticism. Beneath its
lyrical grace lies intellectual precision; beneath its elegance, irony; beneath its apparent
simplicity, emotional instability carefully held in balance.
This first Polish–German bibliophile edition of Sonnets / Sonette was conceived in response
to that tension. The volume avoids monumentality in favour of inward atmosphere: sepia
tonalities, handmade paper, restrained typography, and bindings governed by quiet material
rhythm.
For the first time, selected sonnets from The Book of Songs appeared in Polish translation
within this edition. The publication therefore carries not only bibliophilic significance, but also
cultural and translational importance.
Printed using hand-set Nicolos Cochin type and issued in 333 numbered copies, the edition
belongs consciously to the European fine press tradition in which poetry acquires a distinct
physical tempo through typography, paper, and proportion.
The first thirty-three copies were executed as unique variants. Several entered German and
Polish private collections shortly after publication. Selected examples may still be presented
privately through direct correspondence.
