Stanisław Wyspiański, The Wedding

Some dramas remain inseparable from the imagination of an entire nation. Yet a small
number transcend their historical origins and enter the wider territory of myth, ritual, and
collective psychology. Wyspiański’s The Wedding belongs to that rare category.
Deeply rooted in Polish symbolism and social history, the work nevertheless reaches far
beyond local context. Beneath its historical references unfolds a visionary drama concerned
with memory, paralysis, longing, and the unresolved tension between dream and action.
This collector’s edition was conceived not simply as translation, but as cultural transmission.
The publication emerged partly in response to Andrzej Wajda’s celebrated German-language
staging in Salzburg, which revealed the work’s ability to communicate powerfully across
linguistic and national boundaries.
Typography by Iga Bielejec structures the text with unusual clarity, allowing symbolic density
and theatrical rhythm to coexist without heaviness. The bindings maintain restraint while
preserving a ceremonial atmosphere appropriate to the work’s visionary intensity.
Issued in Polish, German, and English versions, the edition was developed for collectors and
libraries concerned with European drama, cultural memory, and twentieth-century theatre
traditions.
Several copies entered institutional and theatrical collections following publication. Selected
exemplars may be presented privately through direct correspondence.
